From what I know, the new algorithms are quite new.

I used to play with ray tracing quite a bit, it certainly could take a long time to generate one ray traced image.

Aparantly the new algorithms are very efficient and with multi core processors, make real tome renering possible.

Well lets hope anyway.

Speaking of great looking games. Have you checked out the recent tech demos from GDC of Crysis?
