GERMANY says it will pay damages to former prisoners of war sent back to communist East Germany after World War II from camps in the Soviet Union
A new law will see about 12,000 surviving prisoners receive one-off payments ranging from about $840 to $2,500 for those held until at least 1951, six years after the end of the war.
It is estimated the compensation payments will cost a total of just under $22 million.
