Anyone ever edit their Bios, this is the issue I am having. I bought a new HD a segate barracuda it's a 1tb sata 3 drive and I have a older MB wich is a ASUS A7N8X-E motherboard with onboard sil3112a raid controller. If I try to boot with this hd it hangs up at the hd boot screen. The issue is the controller does not reconise sata 3 drives or sata 2 drives for that matter, Asus hasn't updated the bios for this board since 2004. So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a editor to edit by bios..
If I wait until the computer is up and running I can plug the drive in and windows reconises it bvut as soon as I reboot it hangs again. I set the jumper on the HD to 1.5 gig data transfer and this didn't help.
I know I should just updated the MB to a newer board but if I do I will need a new processor graphics card and memory so basically a whole new computer.

Make sure you have the latest bios for your motherboard from Asus' website. The A7N8X boards should recognise SATA 2. However, the drive being SATA 3, you will need to run the drive in SATA2 mode with the 150 switch. Recognising the drive and being able to boot from the drive are sometimes two different matters.
The alternative is a separate SATA controller, which would be a pain, or upgrading the Motherboard. Or possibly swapping that drive for two 500Gb SATA2 drives, which may give you better performance, depending on your setup.

Yea I tried it in resetting the switch to sata 2 mode it still wouldn't boot, i thought about a separate controller card but the majority want support sata3 and if they do they are pci-express which this board want support either..
I guess I am going to have to upgrade.
Tigerdirect has this board and cpu bundled

I'll be watching your choices very carefully Parrot
I need to upgrade my machine and kind of in the same boat as you...everything that is in fashion now won't work with my current setup. So instead of just getting another board and cpu, I have to get another board, cpu, ram and graphics card. Thinking about just doing the barebones thing and piecing everything together.
Still want to get my old machine back up and use it, played the game fine for what I do.

Why worry, tomorrow they switch on that particle collider thingy and the world will end, no point worrying about a hard drive!
THE SKY IS FALLING THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
can you tell I am bored at work?
Serious answer though, personally I would upgrade the motherboard, even if it does mean replacing ither components. Sure, your wallet will hate you, but you'll appreciate the difference

Well I edited the bios added the new raid bios to it, flashed my Bios and the new HD still want work so I guess I am going to upgrade to a new board not sure if I should go with the 780 or 790 chipset yet, thought the 790 will support the 3gb transfer rate...
