After doing the matix in both DVD2one and Instant copy, I will be sticking with Instant copy.

I got nearly the same quality in Instant copy, keeping the entire content, special features and all, as i did with the ripped version on DVD2one.

Instant copy is also the 2nd easiest program to use, after the one button DVDXCopy, though Xcopy was crap.

After the re-encoding, i used DVD Decrypter to burn to disk. using the file created by Instant copy.

Of course leaving out all the special content would make the quality even better.

ALso it apears there is a bug with nero and certain types of media with the A06/106

hmm cool might give it a shot ;)

im only really interested in the movie part not the extras an all that shit.. altho i spose it be cool to keep it an have it there, cause as i burn a dvd with dvdshrink/nero re-encode it only uses up 4.1 - 4.3gb of the disc, so i spose i could get away with adding some extras/menu's and that just so i use up all the 4.7gb fully.

Oh also if you use that firmware crack that means the burner becomes void of warrenty doesnt it? so if my burner fucks up i cant send it back or whatever.. :\

But i guess that wont really happen (i hope) as i have a mate in melb who has the same burner as me and he's has been going strong for 6 months and he has burned over 200 dvd's with it ;) so as long as i dont bash it an fuck it with corrupt software/use shonky media i should be right.

Oh also whats the deal with the DVD+RW TDK discs??

I tried to burn some Battlefield patches to disc for dad, so i could use it as a backup disc for whenever we delete bf an reinstall it, we could just throw the disc in an install the patches off it, plus i could free up some more hd space.

But burning it was fine, an i could read it, but as i took it up onto dads PC to read in hes DVD-CDRom it wouldnt read :| is it maybe because i burnt it too fast? as in nero i burnt it as a data disc an i had the option to burn @ 5x so i did.. didnt take long, then it read fine in my DVD burner drive, i tried it also in my old CDRW burner drive too an it wouldnt read in that also :|

So is that because of the media im using?? (+ plus) means it wont read in other cdroms an (- negative) means it will? or somethin? im still all new to this dvd disc/ burner sheit so let me know ;) ta.

If you used multisession then it may not read in the other drives.

You mean these two options anach?

'Allow files to be added later (multisession disc)'

and

'Verify data on disc after burning'

From memory when i burnt it i selected the first option because i didnt want the data to be burnt to the disc then it becomes permanatly written an i cant use it anymore after that :\ or am i wrong? if i didnt select that option burnt some files to it, could i still format/erase the disc afterwards or whatever??

I wasnt sure thats why i ticked that option :|

Anyway im going to give those programs you suggest a shot tonight anach, let ya know how i go - Got a copy of 'The Lost Battalion' that dad wants me to rip for him.. heard its supposed to be good ;) and doin Bruce Almighty/Bringing down the house/Daddy day care for mum ;)

Anach, what's the cheapest for blanks you've located and where??

I've been holding back on buying a DVD burner for blank prices. $1.50 seems reasonable on mainland for cheapies.

The era is now broadcast quality downloads and backups, especially with a HDTV card which I have. Finally channel 10/TasTV tomorrow.

Also what brand do you suggest, Pioneer?

Shintaro at salamanca systems apparently are $89, though James at Tas Principal will match them.

http://www.xtreemtc.com.au has the cheapest online that ive found, but they are "unknowns".

I mainly burn data, so it works out cheaper per MB to use DVD-R instead of CDR media.

Yes Pioneer. If you read back, there is plenty of info.

Thanks, good site.

btw, channel 10 is a waste of a tv station, if anyone cares. Hobart hasn't missed anything. Absolutely crap on. Home shopping, repeats of American series like seinfeld.

But those ones @ salamanca systems are just a cheapo 2x brand arnt they?? Thats why their so cheap.

As a mate of mine bought a 5 cd pack from there an the discs were only able to be burnt @ 2x and were DVD-R's which was VERY slow.. and they were some cheapo brand i have never heard of, cant remember the name but i could find out.

But the ones @ Taspc were the Imation brand (4x from memory DVD+R), and for 50 cd spindle @ $100 seemed an ok deal, works out to be $2.00 a DVDR so that aint too bad, cheapest i can find in Tassie anyway.

I just bought a 20 cd spindle from Hardly normal and they are Lazer brand for $40 burn @ 4x (DVD+R) so that isnt a bad deal.. better than tandy/target prices as their way overpriced when i checked last.

Cause my mate bought the same burner as me from C.W. Suppliers [ http://www.cws.net.au/ ] for $219 (Pioneer 106D model) an hasnt burnt a coaster so far, only coasters ive burnt is fucked up movie rips that i tried to burn but now im using the proper ripping tools and shouldn't stuff up anymore (i hope) too expensive to stuff up dvdr discs ;) not unlike cdr's..

Also tandy bought out dicksmiths didnt they? Cause i couldnt find a store around here in Glenorchy/northgate area..

Also is it worth putting that firmware crack on Anach?? as i havent touched my burner as of yet just using it how it is.. and i can burn @ 4x which is fast enough takes roughly 20mins to do a full DVD movie, and rips one in less than 20.

Yes the 106D is the OEM version of the A06, so they are identical.

The firmware allows up to 12x ripping of dvd, instead of 2x, so yes its worth it. I also know 2 other people that have done it since i did and all work fine. It also makes the drive region free. Which is great.

The DVDR i got from James were Shintaro -R 50 spindle. -R are the ones to have for all your usual stuff.

Dont know about salamanca systems. They wont be around long anyway.
110 for 50 -R is still pretty good, cheaper per MB than CDR media.

Ok cool, might do it then, as i grabbed all the files needed off john_d just havent got around to installing them.

Why whats up with salamanca systems?? they closing? there site sure looks a shambles.. and needs someone to go over it an re-do it :| couldnt find anything on it an most of the links are stuffed, pretty shonky job by the web designer/ dude who is supposed to maintain it.

But anyway, yea i reckon i will goto Taspc myself an grab those shintaro discs.. sounds like a pretty good deal, so did you bargin James down to the same price as salamanca systems were charging or did you pay $100? (I think was the price for the 50 cd spindle) or was when i was last there.

Still $100/$110 is a good price for 50 DVDR's.. cheapest in tassie that i know of.

Both Tandy and Dick Smith Electronics are owned byt he same big business. The two shops merged into the original Tandy store.

What's wrong with Salamanca Systems? I found them to be one of the better stores for price and stock in Hobart.

Ok just been playing with the new Nero Recode2 software, ripping a DVD movie, with full menus and extras.
I must say, i'm very impressed. It's got all the features of Instant copy, but allows you much more control over your output.

Reading the Recode 2 guide on doom9.org I decided to give it a try. It was easy to use and after setting the configuration options, I made an copy of an entire disk using dual pass encoding.
I couldnt pick a fault with this movie. The reason behind me trying Recode2 was the movie i was trying to rip, would keep stopping at 15% in Instant copy. The only way i could rip it in instant copy was to leave out the menus.
Recode had no problems with this and made a great copy.

You can also adjust the quality individually for each menu, audio track and the main movie. Which is very handy.
Recode2 does a good job at reducing the menu and extras quality to save room for the main feature, without much adjustment.

The other good features of Recode2 are that it rips to standard Vob files, so you can preview the movie before burning in PowerDVD or any standard DVD software. Where as Instant Copy you had to use WMP9 or another program that allows to open non-standard file extentions.

Also Nero Recode2 is a download available from the Nero website, which is much smaller filesize than Instant copy and freely available. It installs using your existing Nero Ultra 6 key as part of the Nero Suite

From now on, I shall be using Recode2 for ripping Movies, though Instant copy I shall still use for direct copy (without compression) of the Special features disk. As most of those are single Layer.

The other cool features of Recode2 that the others didnt have is "Priority" and "Pause"

Very thankful for those tongiht while ive been trying to do other things.

each pass takes 30mins and then 10mins to burn.

Not bad

Just looked at cucusoft's AVI to SVCD VCD & DVD converter.

Made a good job of the Animatrix Divx Rip. Converted back to Vobs to put on dvd.
Made all the correct files and works well. OF course most will only be 2 channel and Divx is usually lower quality than most expect on DVD, but its good for those of you that have old DivX that you want back to DVD.

Takes about 5 hours on my 3000+.

Also has an "invert" function, so the video doesnt end up, upside down.

Recommend it, Im sharing it, got from emule, was very common.

Told ya ;)

Its so damn simple to use, an i found it great for doing dvds the simple way.

Its cool how you can choose the audio that goes onto the DVD, but just make sure you choose the right channels, as you dont want directors cut audio on the DVD trust me :| did that for WindTalkers so annoying plus subtitles. Altho thats the only downside to using it i found, having subtitles added an i cant seem to remove them, but it isnt that much of a hassle just hit 'turn off subtitles' on your dvd remote an your set.

But yeah i havent given that app a go yet anach, but will soon, find it so easy just to use dvdshrink -> burn in nero (recode2) then thats it, done.

ya dont need to do that dude.

in the configuration , you just choose dolby, and it auto selects the 2ch when there is no dobly and selects the right tracks for the right video.
you cut out everything but english subs and audio to save room and it reduces the quality of menus and extras automaticly to save room.

I rip the whole disk, doing 2pass. 2hr movie with extras will come out almost no loss at all. 3hours might need to be movie only.
Lot of movies come out with special features on a seperate single layer disk, which is a direct copy or almost. THe rest are usally short enough to fit on one single layer anyway.

read the recode2 guide on doom9 and setup the same as that, you wont need to guess at any audio tracks or such.
Though Intant copy is no difference in quality. The options are a lot less, though its easier for movie only disks. Same dual pass etc.

Make sure you always do dual pass though. Read the guide.

If some of you are having plugin probs with nero recode and showtime etc.
you need to go into "startsmart" and click the big red nero button, delete all your keys.

Get the latest keygen, enter a new key in there for nero, then generate another key and open nerovision express, press the quesion mark and enter the new key into the "enter reg key" section.

this should stop asking for plugins and allow it to all work correctly.

THere is a registration bug in nero

Ah i see, i never read that guide on doom9 thoe, i just gave it a shot an did it without any help/info about it lol ;) turned out first dvd i did windtalkers turned out fine, apart from the subtitles thats all, but was an easy fix as i said just press 'turn off subtitles' on the remote with your dvd.

Think it was Pits who said to use Nero Vision, i gave that a go an it was a bit lame :| i liked how it gave you total control of how you made your dvd but was annoying and i ended up using recode2 which was much easier an alot better imo.

I also noticed that bug too, fkn nero, recode would keep comming up saying 'please register before continuing to use this..' then you would click it an it would auto-shutdown :| grr.. but yea i did the same thing as you.. re-registered it, an registered recode an all is sweet now.

Just tried DVDSHrink.

Basicly you can see nero recode2 is made by the same dudes.

Nero has more features and better interface though. More refined.

So for my money, out of all these, Recode2 is the one to use.

yer only advantage that i can see from using recode is being able to rip entire dvds.

DVDShrink is perfect for large movies an just ripping the main movie itself, where as recode does the whole lot (extras/ menu/ chapter selection) which rawks.

Hey Anach what is the lowest quality percentage you would rip a movie at?? Like say a movie i was about to rip said the quality would be 75+% thats cool yeah?? Plus keeping the extras n all.

Cause i know if you have a large movie, you can take out scenes like the intro, or that FBI warning crap, plus extras (if the percentage is that low) to improve the main movie in the end, since it has to compress it to fit under 4.7gb.

did one at 60, which was fine.

depends on movie.

but generally, i let nero pick, if the movie is 2hrs long and under then i havent had a problem with quality and most good 2hr movies have a seperate extras disk anyway, and most the not so popular movies dont have many extras.

So it works out pretty well.

Think ill make the move back to DVD shrink after lookin at the latest version.

Same as recode, but Ive had to make use of the only thing I couldnt seem to set in nero, was still pictures for the menus.

Other than that, they exactly same program. Just nero is setout a little nicer.

Yeah ive heard about the new version of dvd shrink sounds pretty good how it has the burning capability added, so u can rip+burn all in one.

But how good is it?? like does it still strip the extras/menus to compress the dvds in size?? or does it finally give the option to strip what u want and just compress the movie itself to fit it to 4.7gb.

Im still using nero recode as i find it great for ripping the occasional rented dvd or from a mate, but i have been ripping my .avi's to dvd now as getting rid of the fkn 140gb of movies i have on drive :o

So been wanting to get rid of them for ages and free up space for other important 'stuff' :p

I used this guide off ircspy that i found works pretty good ( http://www.ircspy.com/guides.asp?mode=display&id=569 ), unfortunately can only fit 1 movie per dvd, but its a start. Simple process of using VirtualDub>TMPGEnc>DVD Author>Nero and theres your movie.

Movies come out great as well its as good as DVD to the eye, and sound is fine cause you rip/encode the movie @ a very high bitrate, which inturn produces a very high quality movie on dvd, just make sure you do the movies that stay in sync, as i have a few on hd that go out of sync half way through or towards the end, so im not going to bother ripping them - they go straight to recycle bin an i will try obtain a better copy later on.

DVD Shrink as far as i can see, allows you to strip, compress or rip what ever sections you want. As well as convert menus to Images instead of video.
