Germany to pay damages to WWII prisoners

Unread post by Istik » Sat Dec 01, 2007 4:24 am

GERMANY says it will pay damages to former prisoners of war sent back to communist East Germany after World War II from camps in the Soviet Union

A new law will see about 12,000 surviving prisoners receive one-off payments ranging from about $840 to $2,500 for those held until at least 1951, six years after the end of the war.

It is estimated the compensation payments will cost a total of just under $22 million.

Former prisoners of war who returned home to post-war West Germany have already received compensation
