Los Gatos, Calif. – Cryptic Studios™, a leading developer and publisher of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), announced today that it has secured the global rights to develop and publish Star Trek® Online, a massively multiplayer online game based on the legendary Star Trek franchise, from CBS Consumer Products.

Cryptic will unveil the first Star Trek Online gameplay footage as well as details about this highly anticipated MMO at the annual Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas on Sunday, August 10, 2008. Already knew about them making it. Just want the darn footage

Well it was in development, then the plug got pulled, now it is back. Can't remember if this is the same developer as the first go around.

The announcement seemed fresh (today) though and all the posts on the site are from today.

The screenshots don't really give a sense of awe and wonderment... more like "here is a tree", and "here is a big solar panel in space". So yeah.. to your point, gimme some video of phasers, Hortas, and big ship battles in the Mutara Nebula.

I think it was generally assumed on the internets that Cryptic was taking over. There was no confirmation, but every site I visited seemed to know what Cryptic was announcing ahead of the annoucement.

I read something a while back, shortly after the other company folded that Cryptic was taking over, so wasnt sure why all the fuss suddenly.

Probably similar to all the rumours about GTA4 coming to PC. When it's generally assumed it will, just like every other GTA before it

Just having Spock tell us all about it makes me want to cancel my SWG accounts right now.

Just finished the 40-something minute webcast.

I gleaned the following:

1. This release seems likely to be at least a year out
2. The gameplay video doesn't show a whole lot
3. The conventioneers are some sad, sad folks.

He said release in about 3-4 years.

There will be lots of very sad, sad people playing that game.

3-4 years?! How could they have that much develpment time left based on the trailer I wouldn't think anywhere near that. And why would they be promoting it now if it was that far away?
