It'd be interesting to know the context of the situation. Nothing irritated me more when I was a kid than when my parents arbitrarily announced that it was time for me to immediately drop whatever it was I was doing. What I heard of the exchange, it sounded like ALL parties (parents and the boy) were drama queens. Like the comment from the father: "Son, you are damaging yourself." Perhaps they'd prefer he was out smoking crack with another group of friends?

That was also my first thought, though later he comments about it being this way for over a year. Like it's all he does.
