As Facebook and MySpace duke it out for the attention of pretty young things with poor spelling, those of a more cynical bent are taking their chatter elsewhere.
Hatebook, one of the many websites to mock the name and layout of the big two social networking companies, is allowing people all over the world to tell each other just how much they suck.
Like an evil version of Facebook, the website requires users to sign up and create a profile before they can start hurling insults and luring others to their "Hate-clan" with elaborate plans for world domination.
Hey loser, fill out the form already
To get users in the right frame of mind, Hatebook's registration form includes a verification process with letters and numbers that are almost impossible to make out.
When you do finally submit the right combination of upside-down sevens and deformed letter Ks, a friendly welcome message is displayed: "Hello sucker!"
Fleshing out your profile involves adding details such as "Websites I hate" – which by now includes www.hatebook.org – "Things that suck" and "Why I'm better than you".
A flick through the list of recently-joined users – or Haters, as they're called – reveals the usernames bigmafia, HateCrime666 and josefstalin, among those fit to publish.
Their avatars – the images users choose to represent themselves – are a mix of infamous dictators, offensive cartoons and a few dolled-up emo types who don't seem to get the joke.
One male Hater appears dressed as a woman with two black eyes, a soggy cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a deadpan facial expression.
Another has chosen a picture of a white Barbie doll with something stuffed under its shirt so that it looks pregnant, with two black plastic child-dolls standing at its feet.

After finishing the registration process, a number 1 pops up in bold font on the left of the screen to indicate that a message has arrived. Next to it is the word "Junkmail".
The message is from the website's mascot – Hatebook's version of Tom on MySpace – who appears in his trademark pose, with his right pinky finger held to pursed lips.
"Be evil – take over the world!" the message says, and the sender adds you to his friends list as you read it.
The Hatebook sign-up is now complete – and that's how Dr Evil became my homeboy.
